On campus.

Campus-based students meet on campus every Monday for 16 weeks during the semester. Our classroom and Zoom meetings are led by Dr. Schlosser. Dr. Schlosser received her PhD from the University of Missouri 11 years ago in sociology as well as a Master’s and Bachelor’s degree in sociology. Dr. Schlosser started at Coastal Carolina University in 2019. Her research focuses on prisons and improving prison policy. It has always been a goal of hers to teach a class for incarcerated students, while her main focus is interviewing incarcerated people to use their experiences and insights to improve prison policy across the country. Dr. Schlosser has published 2 books on prison policy and she says it is always important to listen to people who are incarcerated to improve the conditions and the prison system. She went on to say this is the most challenging course she has ever taught……in a good way, because it has taught her to learn on the fly. There are plenty of gray areas and plenty of learning opportunities. Being flexible has been the key to keeping this class afloat.

When asked how she likes working with Dustin Walters, she said that “We stay in close contact about what we want from this class, what we are going to do each week, and where we want to be by the end. I think he is an inspiration. I cannot think of a better person to work with, because he has been so open and accommodating and he will stop whatever he is doing to help. He is still working on his Masters and dealing with recovery for the incarcerated students, so to be this helpful has truly been a blessing.”
